Arizona regulates esthetician scope through the AZ Board of Cosmetology. Most non-medical skincare falls within your independent scope. Medical-scope services require a Medical Director’s written standing orders and physician/NP delegation. Do estheticians in Arizona need a medical director?
Only if performing services beyond the AZ Board of Cosmetology’s independent scope. Facials, waxing, and superficial exfoliation don’t require an MD. Medical peels, microneedling, microchanneling, PRP-adjacent, and medical-depth dermaplaning all do.
Can an esthetician do microneedling in Arizona without a medical director?
No. Microneedling is a medical procedure that punctures the skin at variable depths and is not within independent esthetician scope. Legal performance in Arizona requires either a prescriber performing it, or a Medical Director’s written standing orders authorizing esthetician performance under delegation.
What about PRP services?
Any PRP service requires a licensed prescriber to draw blood and prepare the PRP under prescriptive authority. Estheticians cannot perform these steps. PRP-adjacent esthetician services (topical delivery after prescriber-performed steps) work under clear Medical Director framework.

Can I hire an MD without becoming an employee or partner?
Yes. Medical Director engagements are contractor arrangements under a written agreement with a defined retainer. The MD is not an employee, owner, or investor in your business.
Does the medical director need to be on-site?
For most esthetician-led studios operating under delegated authority, no. Off-site directorship via written protocols, standing orders, scheduled chart review, and emergency consultation access is standard for delegation-model practices.
