Questions to ask your carrier
- Are the specific procedures you perform, such as filler, PRP, IV therapy or hormone pellets, covered?
- Does the policy depend on supervision, a medical director, or a written protocol?
- What are the per-claim and annual limits?
- Does it cover you as an employee, an independent contractor, or an owner?
Claims-made and occurrence
A claims-made policy covers claims reported while the policy is in force, so leaving the policy may require "tail" coverage for earlier work. An occurrence policy covers incidents that happened during the policy period regardless of when the claim is made. Understand which you have before you change employers.
Training certificates and insurers
Insurers decide what training they accept. A certificate of completion does not by itself guarantee coverage, so ask your carrier what documentation it needs before you rely on a course.
Questions to ask about a policy
Ask who is covered and for which procedures, the limits, whether the policy is occurrence or claims-made, and whether tail coverage is needed when you leave. Ask to see the certificate or policy in writing.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the practice’s policy covers you personally.
- Not checking that aesthetic procedures are included.
- Forgetting tail coverage when changing jobs.
Frequently asked
Does a training certificate guarantee insurance coverage?
No. Acceptance depends on the individual insurer, so confirm in writing what your carrier requires.
Do I need my own policy if my employer has one?
Employer coverage may not follow you or may not cover everything you do. Ask what is covered, and consider your own policy if there are gaps.
